For example, this piece was a draft of what a hallway looked like. We worked on using perspective to draw with a vanishing point.
I used the what we learned there to make a final project that was original and my own. I used perspective drawing in my final piece because the lane ropes are disappearing into a vanishing point. Also, you can really see how I used the different values of a pencil to create contrast in the picture. I wanted to focus the viewer on the block with the cap and goggles, so I emphasized that with my shading. As you can also see, I used shading to create a more natural, flowing look with the water. Using both value and perspective, I was able to create a final piece I'm really proud of.
Another technique I worked a lot with and improved with was using contour lines. We talked about how darkening certain lines on a drawing automatically brings your eyes to them. In the first picture, I drew a spray bottle normally, and the second time, I drew it really focusing on the weight of the contour lines. You can really see how that affects the drawing. I learned that by doing this in a piece, you can easily create emphasis at any point.
One of the final things that really helped me see my improvement as an artist this unit was when we redrew our first object. I drew my water bottle the very first week. It was really amazing to see how different they looked. The first time, I drew mostly just what my head told me a water bottle looked like, but after this unit, I learned that when you really observe something you're drawing, it shines through in your piece. As you can see from comparing my first and final object pieces, I was able to improve by using the techniques I leanred like value and weight of contour lines. I really focused on the shape and proportions of the water bottle and used that to create a drawing that was a lot better. For example, the strap of the water bottle was black, so I shaded that really dark on purpose. Also, I darkened the outer lines of the water bottle's body to create depth.
All in all, I really enojoyed this unit and I saw how much I improved. I can't wait for upcoming units and learning new techniques.
